Families That Bake Together, Stay Together

kapa

Schools are now closed and there are fun things the whole family can do together like baking. Put on your chef hat and apron this month and bake-off. It’s a great activity for bonding and kids could learn some life lesson.

For example, kids can learn Maths while baking. When they add a cup or 2 of a certain ingredient and tht way, they’re learning numbers. Where they add 3 ½ scoops of Prestige Margarine for instance they’re learning about fractions.

Baking is also a good opportunity to teach life lessons such as patience or delayed gratification. If for example baking a cake takes 45 minutes, they’ll have to learn to wait that long to enjoy it. It is also a way of promoting life skills and fighting stereotypes that men do not belong in the kitchen.

Cooking is not a chore, it is a life skill that every parent should be teaching. Cake baking can also be a fun way of showing gratitude to others by preparing cookies, cakes and sharing them with neighbours and friends.

It also develops your child’s motor skills. When picking up a spoon they’re strengthening their grasp necessary for holding a pen.

As you bake, you’re also promoting social skills and interesting interactions. Who is going to do what? When? How? How many times? And so on. Kids learn how to ask questions and communicate.

Since kids will refer to a recipe book from time to time as they bake, this will boost their reading skills. Learning to follow a recipe book teaches discipline that will translate to your child learning to read and follow directions.

Remember to stay safe and have fun while you are at it!
