From Restaurant Hopping to an Easter cookout in the wild

What do you do when you’ve exhausted all the top restaurants in your city? You gather your foodie friends, pack your bags, and head out to the wild for a cookout like no other! That’s exactly what my group of friends did this Easter, and it turned out to be an adventure of a lifetime. We set our sights on the Maasai Mara, one of Kenya’s most popular national reserves, and armed with our food baskets, we embarked on a culinary journey through the savannah.

The Journey Begins:

Our journey started with a long drive from Nairobi, but the breathtaking views of the Great Rift Valley made it worth the while. As we got closer to our destination, we were greeted by herds of wildebeest, zebras, and giraffes grazing on the plains. It was like something out of a movie, and we couldn’t believe that we were actually in the wild.

Setting up Camp:

We arrived at our campsite just as the sun was setting, and we quickly got to work setting up our tents and fire pit. Our main ingredient for the cookout was, of course, Rina Vegetable Oil, which we had packed in a sturdy cooler. The oil’s triple-refined, pure vegetable palm oil made it perfect for our outdoor cooking needs, and we were excited to see how it would enhance the flavors of our little food experiments.

The Cookout:

We decided to start with a classic Kenyan dish, Nyama Choma (grilled meat), which we seasoned with a mix of herbs and spices. As the meat sizzled on the grill, we couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride in our cooking skills. The Rina Vegetable Oil proved to be a lifesaver as it was non-sticky, with a low tendency to smoke, and had an extended life, making it ideal for both shallow and deep frying.

As we ate, we were joined by some unexpected guests – a family of elephants! It was an unforgettable moment, as we watched them graze nearby, and even saw a baby elephant take a playful tumble. We also spotted a pride of lions in the distance, and a cheetah on the prowl the next day. It was a reminder of how much Kenya has to offer, and how important it is for us to explore and appreciate our own country.

Our takeout:

Our Maasai Mara cookout was the perfect break from our usual restaurant hopping, and it reminded us of the beauty and diversity of our country. We were able to create delicious meals that tasted even better against the backdrop of the wild. One lesson learned? Travel more and explore Kenya’s natural wonders! The city never sleeps but you should.

With the low season coming up, call up your city friends and roam where the city lights are replaced by stars. Where the paved roads are replaced by the earth soil and where the morning alarm is replaced by morning bird chirps.
