BE A SHUJAA

It’s October already. We’re only a few months away from 2023. Can you believe it? Shout out to all of you who are keeping strong and that on its own is something to celebrate. Speaking of celebrations, we will be celebrating Mashujaa Day and Utamaduni Day this month.

Mashujaa Day is commemorated every 20th of October to celebrate the heroes that fought for independence. It’s also a day we commemorate and honour local heroes, from your teacher, a community leader, a relative, or even someone who taught you how to swim – the list goes on and on.

Though the blog this month is about Mashujaa Day, we must mention Utamaduni Day. It’s a day set aside to celebrate and appreciate all the diverse cultures and traditions in the country. From the authentic Maasai culture in their flowing red checked shukas to the muslims down at the coast with their classy black hijabs, this diversity and mash up of cultures is what makes truly Kenyan.

Now back to Mashujaa Day. It’s a day different people celebrate differently. Some people will choose to chill in the house, others will take a road trip, some others will want to go for a walk at Karura, and yet others will throw it down and invite their friends. Whichever way you celebrate Mashujaa Day, there is always food involved.

If you are curious about simple thoughtful ways to appreciate the heroes in your life, then stick with us and follow along. There are several ways to celebrate a hero. One of the many ways to celebrate and show appreciation to a hero is to prepare a tasty treat that will rescue a hero from their own worst enemy hunger.

During Mashujaa day or any other holiday, you can take a road trip to honour some of our heroes – grandparents. Take some shopping with you, some chai, bread not forgetting to add Prestige Margarine to perfect the combo.

Also, if you’re having friends coming over, this would be a perfect time to show off your baking skills. Did you know that Prestige Margarine is a baker’s favourite cake partner? Nothing comes even close to Prestige when it comes to baking.

Another way to celebrate Mashujaa Day is to be a hero for the community.  Why not make sandwiches, and cakes or even go shopping and visit a children’s home? Be a hero for those who have no role models, mentors or anyone to look after them.

You could also visit a nursing home and talk, and play with the elderly. Being a hero does not mean wearing a cape, achieving superhuman fetes, in some instances simply means giving back.

What if you noticed that your neighbourhood is always dirty? Why not organize a clean up? Don’t wait for ‘serikali’ all the time, take the initiative, and do something. That is why we have Mashujaa Day, for people to rise, take initiative and do something good for the public. After then clean-up, make some mandazis, and sandwiches from Prestige of course.

That is what it means to be a shujaa, taking the initiative. Let’s not be a society of whiners, let’s be a society of winners by taking initiative.

Imagine if the gallant men and women that fought for independence waited for someone else to take initiative. We would not be here now enjoying the fruits of independence. If you liked this blog, please chat us in the comment section.
