Covid fatigue: Why we must continue following guidelines

covid fatigue KAPA

The government first announced that the coronavirus pandemic was with us in March last year. When they first did so, nobody knew what the disease could do and was naturally very scared to catch it. Therefore, we all followed the set guidelines to fight the pandemic religiously. We constantly washed our hands, nobody left home without a mask and we all observed social distancing.

It has now been ten months since we first heard of the first corona virus case and it’s almost become a part of us to the extent where we are not as scared of the disease as we once were. Naturally, most people have relaxed and are not following the guidelines set by medical experts to fight the pandemic. But here are a few realities.

  • According to Worldometers (https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/kenya/), as of Wednesday 6th January 2021, Kenya reported 97,346 cases of coronavirus. This represents 0.18% of our 54 million population. So far, there have been 1,694 deaths and 79, 457 recoveries.
  • While about 81% of the reported cases have had full recoveries, it has also been reported that the virus causes complications later in life even if one recovers from it. For this reason, the insurance sector is considering treating it as a pre-existing condition in the future. This means your future insurance premiums will be much higher if you catch Covid now.
  • Kenya still has about 200 cases of new cases of Covid every day. This is clear proof that we are not out of the woods yet.
  • While vaccines have been found, their success is still in question. Australia has recently cancelled an order for 51 million doses after their trials ran into trouble. It takes years to develop a vaccine and it also takes time to identify a vaccine’s side effects.

We hope these 4 reasons are enough to compel you to wash your hands regularly, wear a mask, observe social distancing and follow all set Covid-19 guidelines going forward. Remember to make sure surfaces around your home are sanitised and disinfected.
