Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Every year in the month of October, we take part in the breast cancer awareness campaign and this year we should all strive to wear the pink ribbon and educate ourselves and our loved ones. Breast cancer is the most diagnosed type of cancer in Kenya. It occurs when cells in the breast grow abnormally. They divide more rapidly than healthy cells and may spread around the body. Approximately 6,000 women are diagnosed with the disease each year and the numbers are trending upwards. The good news is that early detection has helped as more information reaches people in low and middle-income countries. This means that medical professionals are able to catch the disease before it progresses too much thus allowing for treatment.

Prevention remains a big part of the effort in the fight against cancer and other non-communicable diseases. Lifestyle choices have been known to have an impact on the incidences of cancer. This includes diets that are rich in natural and unprocessed foods like fruits and vegetables. Healthy eating goes a long way in preventing cancer when paired with exercise and general wellness for the body.

The hurdles to fighting breast cancer remain high though. On the continent it has been found that a number of factors affect a patient’s chances of survival. These include delays in diagnosis and treatment, limited access to medical care like mammograms and the astronomical costs associated with the same.

A step by step approach is key in making a change for the men and women affected. Fighting the scourge requires a concerted effort. One that gives survivors support and provides information regarding prevention and self-checks.

So this year wear a pink ribbon as a reminder to those you care about. Furthermore, a few simple things could save a life from regular checks to what they eat. Tell a friend to tell a friend let’s beat this scourge together.
