This year October is Cancer Awareness month. The aim is to educate and enlighten the public about the symptoms and risk factors of cancer and to ensure as many people are aware of it as possible.

We’ve heard about Cancer, it’s in the news, we probably know someone who triumphed against it, but really, what is it?

According to the Mayo Clinic, ‘Cancer refers to any one of many diseases characterized by the development of abnormal cells that divide uncontrollably and can infiltrate and destroy normal body tissue. Cancer can often spread throughout your body. Cancer is the second-leading cause of death in the world. But survival rates are improving for many types of cancer, thanks to improvements in cancer screening, treatment, and prevention’.

There are many types of Cancer: Breast, Lung, Prostrate, Liver and even brain cancer.

The most common risk factors for cancer include aging, tobacco, sun exposure, radiation exposure, chemicals, and other substances. Some viruses, bacteria, certain hormones, family history of cancer, alcohol, poor diet, and lack of physical activity and being overweight. Some causes of cancer can be prevented, but some like family history and ageing cannot.

To stay healthy and cancer free, there are a couple of lifestyle changes you need to make or maintain to stay healthy. Eating healthy, maintain a healthy body weight and being physically active, and getting regular medical care are all preventative methods of cancer.

Add at least 30 minutes of exercise to your daily routine to reduce the risk of colorectal cancer due to obesity and inactivity. Physical activity can also reduce stress and increase energy, boost your immune system, and control weight.

Getting regular check-ups and screening can help you maintain great health. Some tests can help detect cancer early, or even detect precancerous conditions before they become cancer. Screening has been proven to save lives. So don’t underestimate the power of screening and regular checkups.
